Scam Targets Lost Pet Owners

We’re receiving reports that scammers are pretending to be from MCAS, and telling lost pet owners that they need to pay before they can pickup their pets at the shelter. In some cases, scammers send a code and ask for it to be texted back

MCAS will not ask you to pay fees over the phone, or send codes. Please report any calls or texts to 503-988-7387.

1. Search our Found Pet Reports

Animals are reported found by the public everyday. There are also found reports available for all the stray animals in our shelter. You should search found reports everyday until you find your pet.

Are you looking for a lost animal in a fire evacuation zone? Oregon Department of Agriculture has created a statewide Found Pet Database.

2. If your pet has been missing for more than 3 days

When lost pets come into the shelter without identification, they are held for only 72 hours (3 days) before becoming eligible for adoption. If your pet has been missing for more than 72 hours, look through the adoptable pets on our web site.  Animals with identification are held for 144 hours (5 days) before becoming eligible for adoption. If you see your pet available for adoption, call (503) 988-7387 immediately.

3. Report your lost pet

If you don't immediately find a found report for your pet, submit a lost report. People who find pets search through lost reports to locate owners. It is very important to include a photograph of your pet.

4. Is your contact info current for license and microchip?

If your pet is licensed through Multnomah County, make sure your phone number is up-to-date. Changes can be made on the "Change License Information" page. If your pet has a microchip, be sure your contact information is current with the microchip company. You can also register any microchip for free on the Found Animals Microchip Registry. You can add photos, contact information and health information. You can use this service whether or not your pet's chip was previously registered.

5. Visit our shelter

Unlicensed pets whose owners cannot be located are held for 72 hours (3 days) before becoming eligible for adoption. It is important that you check our found reports a minimum of every 3 days, and if you see an animal you think might be yours to physically come to the shelter to identify it.  A daily review of the Found Reports is ideal.

6. Visit other local shelters

It's a good idea to check other local shelters regularly, especially if you live anywhere near a county line.

7. Register Your Pet and Search on Petco Love Lost

Petco Love Lost is a new service using facial recognition technology to help match photos of lost pets with found animals in our community.  Registering and using the service is easy and FREE.

9. Advertise and look everywhere

Put up lost pet signs. One of the most successful ways to find a lost pet is with fliers placed around your neighborhood. If you offer a reward, do not state the amount. Ask elementary schools in your area to post fliers. Children often find stray pets. Be familiar with lost cat behavior.

10. Don't give up!

Many pets return home or are brought to the shelter months after they were lost. Remember: pets that come in without owner identification are held for 72 hours (3 days) before they become eligible for adoption. Be sure to check the shelter regularly.

When your pet returns, license and microchip your pet to enable a quicker and easier return should they become lost again.
